How to Prepare for ICAS Science

ICAS Science is not a memory test. It is a skills test dressed up in real scientific situations. Students are shown a graph, a data table, an experiment or a diagram, and asked to work something out from it. So the best preparation is not cramming facts — it's practising the thinking.

What ICAS Science actually rewards

ICAS Assessments describes the skills it measures, and they line up like this:

• Observing & measuring — reading instruments and scales correctly.
• Interpreting data — pulling the trend out of a table or graph.
• Applying data — using a pattern or rule to work out a new value.
• Predicting & concluding — saying what a set of results shows.
• Investigating — spotting the variable to change and what to keep the same (a fair test).
• Reasoning & problem-solving — explaining why, using evidence.

These skills are tested across five content strands: Scientific Reasoning & Data, Living World, Material World, Earth & Space, and Physical World. The paper is multiple choice (four options), online, and pitched a little above grade level.

A simple practice plan

1. Get comfortable reading data. Practise pulling one clear sentence out of a table or graph: “as X goes up, Y goes up/down.” This single habit answers a large share of ICAS Science questions.
2. Understand fair tests. For any experiment, your child should be able to say what is being changed, what is being measured, and what must be kept the same. That is the whole idea behind “investigating” questions.
3. Cover all five strands. Don't over-focus on one area — ICAS spreads its questions, so a little across living, material, earth and physical topics beats deep drilling of one.
4. Do timed, mixed practice. A short mixed paper under gentle time pressure builds the real skill: reading a fresh stimulus quickly and reasoning from it.
5. Always review the working. The learning is in why an answer is right — read the worked explanation for every question, especially the ones your child got right by guessing.
