NAPLAN Explained: A Parent's Guide
NAPLAN (the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) is an Australia-wide assessment that gives a snapshot of how students are progressing in literacy and numeracy. It's run by ACARA and sat by students across the country in the same window each year.
Which years sit NAPLAN?
Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit NAPLAN. The questions get progressively more demanding at each level, but the test areas stay the same throughout.
What does NAPLAN test?
NAPLAN assesses four areas:
- Reading — comprehension of a range of texts.
- Writing — a single extended response to a prompt (narrative or persuasive).
- Conventions of Language — spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Numeracy — number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics and problem-solving.
How does NAPLAN Online work?
NAPLAN is now sat online for most students. A key feature is that it's adaptive: the difficulty of the questions a student sees adjusts based on how they're answering, which lets the test pinpoint a student's level more precisely than a fixed paper test.
When is NAPLAN held?
NAPLAN is held once a year in Term 1 (typically around March). The exact dates change each year — always check the official nap.edu.au site for the current testing window.
What do the results mean?
Results place a student on a national achievement scale and show how they compare to the national average and to other students in their year. NAPLAN is one snapshot in time — it's useful for spotting strengths and gaps, not a verdict on a child's ability.
How can my child prepare?
The most effective preparation is steady, low-pressure exposure to the question styles, with explanations so each mistake becomes a lesson. Familiarity with the online format also helps reduce test-day nerves. PrepPath offers NAPLAN practice questions for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across all four test areas, each with a full worked explanation.
