NAPLAN Past Papers: Where to Find Them (Free)
“NAPLAN past papers” is one of the most common things parents search for — and for good reason. Working through real past questions is a great way for a child to get familiar with the format before test day. Here's the honest picture of what's actually available, where to find it, and how to make the most of it.
Are official NAPLAN past papers available?
Partly. ACARA (the body that runs NAPLAN) has publicly released a set of past papers from the earlier paper-based era, and it provides free public demonstration / example tests for the current online format. The single most reliable place to look is the official site, nap.edu.au — always start there rather than with a third-party copy, so you know the material is genuine and current.
Why aren't there recent full past papers?
NAPLAN is now sat online for most students, and the online test is adaptive — the questions a student sees adjust to how they're answering. Because there isn't a single fixed paper anymore, and to protect the integrity of the test, ACARA releases public example tests that show the format and question styles rather than complete year-by-year past papers. So the official demonstration tests are the closest thing to a “recent past paper” for NAPLAN Online.
How to use past papers well
- Start with familiarity, not pressure. The first goal is for your child to recognise the question types and the online tools, so test day feels normal.
- Do them under light timing. Once the format is familiar, try a section under realistic time to build pacing.
- Always review the answers. A past paper only helps if you go back over what was missed — the explanation is where the learning happens.
- Don't over-drill the same paper. There are only a few official sets, so a child quickly memorises them rather than learning the underlying skill.
Past papers vs ongoing practice
This is the catch with past papers: there are only a handful, and once a child has done them, they run out — and re-doing the same questions teaches recall, not skill. That's why most families pair the official demonstration tests with a source of fresh, unlimited practice that explains every answer.
That's exactly what PrepPath is built for. It isn't a copy of official papers — every question is independently written in the style of NAPLAN — but it gives your child unlimited NAPLAN practice tests across all four test areas, each with a full worked explanation and an AI Tutor for the steps that don't click. You can practise by year level too: Year 3, Year 5, Year 7 and Year 9.
The short version
Use nap.edu.au for the official demonstration tests and any released past papers, treat them as familiarisation, and back them up with regular explained practice so your child keeps building the skill after the few official papers are done.
