How to Prepare for EduTest: A Practical Guide
The EduTest rewards reasoning and clear thinking under time pressure, so good preparation is less about memorising and more about familiarity + speed + review. Here's a practical plan.
A step-by-step plan
1. Confirm the sections your school uses
EduTest usually has five sections — Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics and Written Expression — but the make-up and level can vary. Check with the school so you prepare for the right mix and year level.
2. Make the fundamentals automatic
EduTest rewards reasoning, but weak basics slow everything down. Drill number facts, fractions/percentages and close reading until they're fast — speed on the easy questions buys time for the hard ones in a tightly timed test.
3. Learn each reasoning type by its style
Verbal reasoning (synonyms, analogies, letter/number codes) and numerical reasoning (number series, relationships, applied logic) are very learnable with exposure. Work through each type until you can spot the method quickly, rather than starting from scratch each time.
4. Practise under time, then review
Do sections against the clock so pacing becomes second nature, then review every wrong answer to understand the method — not just the correct letter. Reviewing well is where most of the improvement happens.
5. Prepare the writing on its four criteria
The Written Expression task is marked on ideas & content, organisation, language & vocabulary, and spelling/punctuation/grammar. Practise planning quickly, writing a clear opening and ending, and leaving a minute to proofread.
A simple weekly rhythm
- 2–3 short reasoning sessions — alternate verbal and numerical reasoning, timed.
- 1 reading + 1 maths session — mixed questions, always reviewed afterwards.
- 1 writing task — plan, write to time, then check it against the four criteria.
- Keep sessions short and regular rather than long and rare — consistency wins.
