EduTest is an aptitude and achievement test produced by Edutest Pty Ltd. Many independent and some selective-entry schools use it for scholarship selection and entrance/lateral entry. It measures reasoning as well as core reading and maths skills.

What is on the EduTest?

Typically five sections: Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension and Mathematics (all multiple choice), plus one Written Expression task. The exact make-up can vary by school and year level.

How is EduTest scored?

Results are reported as standardised scores that compare your child to other test-takers — there is no simple pass mark, and each school sets its own selection cut-off.

Is EduTest the same as the OC or Selective test?

No. The OC and Selective tests are NSW government placement tests. EduTest is a separate test used mainly by independent schools (and some selective-entry schools) for scholarships and entry, though it tests overlapping reasoning skills.

The five sections

An EduTest sitting usually covers five sections — four multiple choice and one writing task:

Levels and year of entry

Schools use EduTest across a range of entry points — commonly around Year 7 and Year 9 entry, and for scholarships at various year levels. Confirm with your school which level and sections your child will sit.

Format and timing

The four reasoning/achievement sections are multiple choice with five options (A–E).
Each section is tightly timed (around 30 minutes), so pace matters.
The Written Expression task is a single piece completed in a short window, with no separate planning time.

How it's scored

Results are reported as standardised scores that compare your child with other test-takers. There is no fixed pass mark; each school sets its own cut-off. The Written Expression is marked separately, typically on four criteria (ideas & content, organisation, language & vocabulary, and spelling/punctuation/grammar).
