OC Test Maths Checklist: What to Master Before Year 5

The NSW OC (Opportunity Class) test is sat in Year 4, for entry into an Opportunity Class in Years 5–6. Its Mathematical Reasoning section doesn't test advanced topics — it tests whether a child can apply primary maths confidently and quickly. Use this checklist to find the gaps before test day.

Tip: a skill only counts if your child can do it quickly and explain it — not just get there eventually with help.

Number & place value

  • Read, write and order numbers to at least 10,000
  • Round to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000
  • Add and subtract multi-digit numbers fluently
  • Times tables to 12 × 12, recalled quickly
  • Multiply and divide by single digits (with remainders)
  • Multi-step word problems (two or three steps)

Fractions, decimals & money

  • Recognise and compare simple fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5)
  • Find a fraction of a quantity (e.g. 3/4 of 20)
  • Equivalent fractions (1/2 = 2/4 = 5/10)
  • Decimals to two places, and add/subtract them
  • Money: make totals and give change
  • Simple ratios (e.g. 2 for every 3)

Measurement & time

  • Length, mass and capacity with correct units
  • Perimeter and area of rectangles (and the difference between them)
  • Read analogue and digital clocks; elapsed time
  • Convert between units (cm/m, minutes/hours)

Geometry & space

  • Name 2D shapes and 3D solids by their properties
  • Lines of symmetry
  • Angles: right, acute, obtuse
  • Simple grid coordinates and directions
  • Basic transformations (flip, slide, turn)

Data & chance

  • Read tables, picture graphs, column graphs
  • Answer 'how many more / fewer' from a graph
  • Describe chance in everyday language (likely, even, impossible)

Reasoning (the OC differentiator)

  • Continue and describe number and shape patterns
  • Work backwards from an answer
  • Spot the odd one out and justify why
  • Solve problems with more than one step, under time
