What Is the OC (Opportunity Class) Test?
Opportunity Classes (OC) are NSW public-school classes for academically gifted students in Years 5 and 6. Entry is competitive, and places are offered based largely on the Opportunity Class Placement Test, run by the NSW Department of Education.
Who sits the OC test, and when?
Students sit the OC test in Year 4, to apply for an Opportunity Class place starting in Year 5. Applications usually open in the first half of the year, with the test held later in the year — check the NSW Department of Education website for the current year's dates.
What does the OC test assess?
The OC test has three sections:
- Reading — comprehension and interpretation of texts.
- Mathematical Reasoning — multi-step problem solving and number reasoning.
- Thinking Skills — logic, pattern recognition and deduction.
The test is multiple-choice and is designed to measure reasoning ability, not just curriculum knowledge.
How are places decided?
Placement is based on the test result, combined according to the Department's current rules. Because demand far exceeds places, the test is genuinely competitive — but it rewards clear reasoning, which can be built with practice.
How can my child prepare?
The Thinking Skills and Mathematical Reasoning sections are unfamiliar to most Year 4 students, so exposure matters. Practising the question styles — with explanations that teach the underlying reasoning — builds both skill and confidence. PrepPath offers OC test practice across all three sections, each question explained in full, with an AI Tutor for the tricky ones.
